UK offers online Graduate Certificate in Historic Preservation

The University of Kentucky College of Design's online graduate certificate in historic preservation is designed for working professionals and others who are unable to take in-person courses. Like the on-campus certificate, it is designed to introduce core principles and concepts for the purpose of expanding the knowledge and abilities of persons working in related fields. Practicing architects, city planners, archaeologists, historians, design consultants, city managers, architectural review board members, and realtors have found it effective in building knowledge that compliments their existing training and experience.

All of the online courses are delivered via the University of Kentucky's Canvas learning management system. Most are asynchronous courses, meaning there are no scheduled meetings; each student works as their schedule allows. There are weekly assignments and, in some cases, deadlines for submitting material to online discussion boards.

Two of our summer courses are taught in a hybrid format--HP 676 Field Methods in Heritage Conservation/Field School and HP 772 Adaptive Reuse. The first week and last four weeks of the hybrid courses are taught asynchronously online like our other courses, but the second week is a project-based intensive field or studio experience taught in-person in Kentucky.
