Get Involved with the Kentucky Woman Suffrage Project

The Kentucky Woman Suffrage Project has already started gearing up for the centennial of the 19th Amendment's ratification in 1920. The  KWSP is reaching out to all public history, education, and museum professionals to get involved including:

  • Write a biographical sketch on a favorite suffragist for publication on their websites
  • Join in a "suffrage parade" - there are several being planned and they need participants to hold banners, wear suffragist colors/sashes and sing suffragist songs
  • Contribute a favorite book or primary source resource on the Bibliography Project website

And many more cool and exciting ideas. More information here.

Public History/Commemoration Event--Unveiling the Katsina Bronze Sculpture

The unveiling of Kentucky’s first sculpture on public property since the 2015 call of the Kentucky Human Rights Commission for more sculptures honoring women will take place from 2-4 pm on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13, 2018, at Wellington Park, 565 Wellington Way, Lexington, KY.

Sculpted by Amanda Matthews and cast at Prometheus Foundry, LLC in Lexington, the 6' bronze sculpture of Katsina was also the inspiration for the Artemis Initiative. Katsina is the name for wooden doll, carved by the Hopi Indians, and given to girls beginning in infancy and on dance day ceremonies to help them learn about their responsibilities as women in the community. In the Hopi tradition, Katsina means “messenger between humans and the spirit world."
